I am learning, bit by bit, and finally had the chance to try something, and thought lets me make Chilli Chicken!

So I followed the recipe described here, and here are the things that gets newbies confused. (At least I was confused.)

If you can, get the chicken cubes about a square inch each, smaller than that will be too small.

Don't bother about the chilli powder, your dish will still look great.

Garlic's volume will reduce once you start mincing it. 6 medium sized cloves of garlic will be enough for 500g of chicken.

Don't worry about all purpose flour / Maida / corn flour. Use whatever you have. I had to use 3 tbsp of all purpose corn flour, and it was good. but don't add all of the flour at once, do it gradually as you mix, that way the marinate won't get too thick.

When you fry the rest of the garlic paste and the chillies, make sure you have removed most of the oil from the pan that you used for frying, and left about 2 tbsp of oil only.

A better way to know when your onion and bell pepper are done is check that the onion has become transparent and the green of the bell pepper has paled.

Here are some pics!

11:45 AM
Few Bar jokes apart, Ravi showed how to make slider bars vertical, from the default horizontal, Create AsyncTask class for HTTPRequest, and won't have to worry about the threadpool, as its already there.
Ravi's gonna share the slide, so please hold on for the URLs and the pics.
Ravi takes over, says his topic name is not "Know Thy Code" but is "Know framework Code"
The code he will be taking thru are Applications, Application Framework, and Libs. But most of it will be the framework.

A link will be shared to download the framework in TAR, and extract the code to put it in eclipse. Now you can navigate to these extracted code in eclipse when you are working on your app.

11:25 AM
There is going to be a hackathon for Tablets. People interested should contact Amrit.

11:13 AM
Zero budget marketing is about Value to users, viral loops, Company Blog etc and NOT FB pages, Tweets, SEO, Adwords etc.

Raman's session comes to an end.

11:00 AM
Viral loops work for the promotion of the app, without the creator's effort. Viral loops have to be part of the Apps DNA. e.g. 4Square.
Lots of discussion about going viral. The backfire (Color), The intentional (Zynga), The unintentional (Angry Birds)

10:53 AM
Two BIG Questions

Will Females like it? (its the slide, I Swear!)

What bottlenecks that existing or competitor apps have are eased?

10:45 AM
The next thing in line is UX.
App Design guidelines

Useful and to the point

Intuitive

Avoid existing Obstacles and and ease bottlenecks

Easily Accessible

Credible and Trustworthy

Predictable

Self Learning

10:30 AM
Key Question : "What VALUE will our app offer to our users?"
What is NOT value?

Real Time Details

Cool Graphics

Cloud Computing

Hi Fi Algo etc

Morphological Analysis - Procedure to shortlist features

So BAUG is back to its usual self, and the meetup is also back to the usual place, ThoughtWorks.Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-39697222786181759592011-05-29T10:11:00.040+05:302011-05-29T13:02:08.319+05:30Bangalore Android Developers Meetup 9 (Tabs!) : Live Event01:01PM
We are almost at the end of the session, with people playing with the Xoom.

12:39PM
Native Apps
Though Native app support is evolving, its still not there, and to develop in Eclipse, you will need Sequoyah. However, things can work with a breeze if you happen to use the Motodev Studio.

The Motodev Studio can be downloaded free of Cost from here.
A demo of Motodev Studio is on.

12:20PM
Testing Apps
After some socializing, we are back to sessions, the testing side of the story.
There preferred took is JUnit. Logcat, DDMS, TraceView are the Devs best friend.
Strictmode API also helps build quality, as it catches the Disk and Network access in the UI thread, helping remove the ANRs.
MonkeyRunner generates pseudo random events. Good for stress testing.

Motodev Studio sports mem analyzer, App Validator, Integrated Emulator which improve the productivity even more. Its MonkeyRunner is more customizable too.

11:55AM
Android 3.1, API Level 12
Resizable widgets are here.
New Input devices and motion events are supported. Such as Mouse, Joystick, gamepads etc.
USB API is also new. Android now supports USB host support. The device should also support.
Official MTP support is also available via android.mtp.*.

11:44AM
There is discussion how to track the devices as no method is foolproof. Some devices do not have IMEI, MAC Addresses are not consistent, Android_IDs are not unique, factory reset kills almost everything!

Some best practices now, such as revisiting the images, permissions, font sizes, minSdkVersion, one apk rather than multiple.

11:12AM
Animations
There are 2 types of animations, such as View Animations and Property Animation which is introduced in 3.0.

Sensors
There are only 30 apps which use Gyroscope. There are no apps which use the barometer. (BTW, what to do with it anyway?)
Want no rotation? use android:screenOrientation="nosensor".

Touch Screens
From API Level 9, Android supports 10 finger tracking multitouch, and to use it, the hadrware has to support it too. Xoom does it.

Telephony
Telephony feature is not supported, but does support the radio for 4G/LTE networks.

11:03AM
Views
There are new views introduced in 3.0, such as android.widget.popupMenu etc.

Hardware Accelation
HA is built in for a subset of 2D graphics (Canvas API). HA can be defined in the manifest by setting android:hardwareAccelerated="true" for the entire app or the activity.
This can also be done thru code by doing
Window win = getWindow();
win.setFlags(WindowManager.layoutparams.FLAG_HARDWARE_ACCELERATED, WindowManager.layoutparams.FLAG_HARDWARE_ACCELERATED);

Texture Compression
Very much dependent on Chipsets. (Works in all API level though)
ETC1 on all devices with OpenGL ES 2.0, but no alpha.
PVRTC for Power VR from Imaginion
ATTIC etc.

10:45AM
Fragments
Allows an app to be divided into subcomponents, those can be individually managed and combined in various ways such as creating a multi-pane UI.
The APIs are
android.app.Fragment, android.app.ListFragment (like list activity), android.app.DialogFragment (A floating one). There is android.app.FragmentManager is there to interact with the fragment (findFragmentById). There is also a android.app.FragmentTransaction to do operate on fragments (add, remove, replace, visibility etc).

10:33AM
Holographic Theme
MinSdkVersion has to be 11 to have it inheritted.
You can dim the system bar by
View v = findViewById(R.id.viewid);
v.setSystemUiVisibility(View.SYSTEM_BAR_HIDDEN);
v.setSystemUiVisibility(View.SYSTEM_BAR_VISIBLE);

There is no Menu button. So if a menu interaction is required, the overflow button in Action bar is to be used.
The Icon can also be made actionable. Action bar can have action items listed rather than in the overflow menu, both with icons and text and both being optional.
You can get the action bar ref by doing a
2:05 PM
Android Performance by Neeraj
Android is not an OS, rather an entire stack. Initially meant for smartphones, now it is used in tablets, media players, Cars, TVs etc

Licensing wise, the Linux kernel is GPL licensed, and everything else is Apache Licensed.

1:54 PM
The other solution meant intelligent copy paste. Qs from people include, how will a general app from market behave? Ans is it by default sent to the primary display.

1:32 PM
Applications, Activity Manager, Window Manager, Surface Flinger, OpenGL, Kernel Driver support is required for Dual Display.

Changes required in : Activity Manager, WindowManagerService, IWindowManager.aidl

The change is complex, needs a lot of code change, not future proof, tough to make it work for more than 2 display.

1:28 PM
Bhavya going techical now. Android supports Single display.
Manifest file is like surname, talks a lot about your background, says Bhavya.

1:20 PM
Advantages
Dynamic UIs, Content focus, ease of use, not loosing focus.

1:14 PM
Dual Displays for 2 things in one. Not only for Cell Phones, but for many other devices.
This also makes other entities disbelieve the issuing authority. And have to do the verification on their own, which increases the cost of Service Delivery. Thats where UID comes in.

It has been long since I have been out of Bangalore (Well, not counting visits to Bhubaneswar, my hometown). A welcome visit definitely (The deal is even better, I am here on business, company funded!)

The plan came to me yesterday. I booked a seat on KF, the king of good times! And to my surprise, when I saw the plane today, it was ATR-72, the smallest ever plane I have ever travelled on! It also had blades!

Got a prepaid cab to The Gateway Hotel, close to the beach! The rooms are ok, bathroom is good. took a few pics on the way and in the room.

the wifi connectivity is good, even from hundred meter outside the gates. blogger loads pretty well and fast. but there is one very serious issue, the text input. the text area in blogger does not bring up a on screen keyboard when tapped, so it seems there is noway a android phone without phycal keypad will be able to use blogger, or similarly coded sites.

but, its not all sweet for the physical keypads too. these is no way you can type a capital letter, or other chars which need special keys, in my case the numbers etc.
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-41230693753884750482010-04-24T10:30:00.054+05:302010-04-24T15:07:49.441+05:30Bangalore Android Developers Meetup 3 : Live event3:05 PM
So my idle devil's workshop has come up with a agenda that lists

1. Procure a Java web server, for god-knows-why reasons

2. Build a USB Charger which will be using 9V batteries (should come handy in excursions)

3. Work on Android for my employer

4. Work on Android to publish a app in the market. (Got an idea from a team mate's plight)

Of the aforesaid stuff, I hope, point 2 should be easy, given that I get the stuff I want from SP road this Saturday, and my friend Mayur helps me by parting with his soldering iron.

Point 1 is also very easy, but that doesn't have a purpose yet, wait, may be I can start my own cloud! Not that I undermine the Shiv Sena capacity to create issues out of thin air (MNIK!), its Valentines! Love is in the air, Youngster's love for their beloveds, Shiv Sena's love for Khan's Downfall, SRS(if this doesn't ring a bell, I guess Mutalik will do) love for Culture, and Peoples love for Ash on Mutalik's face. I am loving it!

I also intend to get my hands on "Dork : The Incredible Adventures of Robin 'Einstein' Varghese" by Sidin. I would also like to read "May I Hebb Your Attention Pliss" by GB. Dear Valentine, are you listening???
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-12697569109704454012010-01-16T23:55:00.002+05:302010-01-17T00:14:04.812+05:30Long time no see.As usual, I am back from my slumber to blabber something. Days are being eventful for me. Falling sick, Diagnosed with Dengue, being veg for 10 days in a row (Lunch / Dinner either being Roti/Dal, or Subway Veg Delite) etc etc has taken enough of my time.

The other thing I have been doing is Android programming for a Proof of Concept which, for me is like a hobby. though I was very much attracted to the technology when released, I lost touch owing to random stuff at office. But now, I am enjoying doing this stuff. It really feels good to do something different (And guide even senior people do the same.)

Of late, I have been thinking to delve into the ROM making of Android. As of now, I am only writing applications and using ROMs designed by other people to flash the project phone. But it seems to be a better thing to learn building the ROMs all by myself, which will make me learn. Yeah, that surely will require a lot more time and dedication, as well as system requirements, it promises to teach me a stuff or two.

Lets see, how well it goes.
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-42578748291218173302009-12-11T10:57:00.002+05:302009-12-11T11:15:53.391+05:30Yet another blabbering!I am in BIAL now, leaving for a 24 day vacation to Bhubaneswar. It has been 8 months since I was there.

The last time I was in this airport, The WIFI speed was excellent, it was surpassing 1Mbps per user! But today it is so so slow. It can't even run the speedtest.net tests! Even the Draft saving feature of Blogger is failing sometime.

I wanted to write about hte CATastrophe on the 1st day 1st show. But that never happened, But in this leisurely time I would like to put my thoughts.

1. I don't know about the Test System Architecture, but then, was the load test never done?

2. From the news reports, I guess they used a Distributed Architecture, I mean individual servers for each test center, How come there were no backup servers?

3. Prometric says it was a virus attack. There has been no recent upsurge in virus activities lately. And even if it was a virus attack, Which I find hard to believe, it is pretty unlikely that only this particular s/w was targetted, because no one knew, except the developers, what the software is like. And again, had there been virus, the S/w wouldn't have started at the first place! (FYI : S/W engineers take help of Viruses all the time to cover up there fault, cause Laymen have no idea what a computer virus is.)

4. Don't you think IIM Profs, who are supposed to build Managers, don't even know how to manage a CBT is irony at its best!

5. But this Profs are like those idiotic Managers those never accept their fault even if it is there out in the open.

Signing out.
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-72701717021962915082009-11-01T22:35:00.003+05:302009-11-01T23:11:41.756+05:30Rock on - is it rocking? Its probably one and half months since I posted something. I thought I would tweet to make up my absence in blogosphere, but that didn't happen either. But I was kind of forced to put on this post.

There is yet another reality show, called Rock On, which aims to create a Desi band and send them to the MTV show in somewhere in US. The honourable judges are Mr. Ram Sampath, Mr Nikhil Chinappa and Mr Kailash Kher.

Nikhil : Judges pagalpan (Craziness), says he doesn't know what is it, but would know if you have it! what crap!

Ram : judges Music. Period.

Kailash : Judges desipan.

On a vanila day, the judges will speak something like this.

Nikhil : Wow! That was ... Awesome! ... What was that shit? It didn't sound like music, it was all noise! This is not rock! (As if he member of some rock band since his birth!)

Ram : (Trying to cover up Nikhil's blunders in judgement) That was full noise and it was great! I liked it!

Then, like some high school history teacher

Mr. X, you sounded exactly like Band Y's(some obscure band which could not sell even 10 copies) guitarist Z (was manageable, considering the Band's wholesome performance.)

Same goes for other people in that band.

After a few episodes, I felt that if Ram were true, all the musicians in the show are all fake, trying to copy someone, and get caught red handed by Ram while trying to do so. I wonder when would he be in the Copyright Infringement Prevention Board, so that all the plagiarism in bollywood would vanquish. (BTW, he recognised his music being used by the Roshans' in Crazzy 4, a feet reproducible by the likes of Anu Malik, Pritam etc)

Mr. Kailash : Mujhe yeh jo sangit tha, yeh samajh mein nahi aya. May be its time for a mass scrapping event!) and I read the testimonials, some old, few new, all still bristling with joy and still tell you what you are good at. they instill a new wave of freshness, a new belief in oneself.

May be I am getting nostalgic. I don't feel like going to Facebook, probably think that it can't do to me what orkut has done. I need to go, I need to scrap everyone now!
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-48446782987876882992009-09-11T23:39:00.002+05:302009-09-11T23:53:39.172+05:30Gadget mania!I have been longing to buy something geeky for a long time now. My subconscience tells me to grab something, but then conscience tells me I have really got no use for it. I thought of buying a new 3G phone with GPS, but then thought that 3G isn't here yet (at least for my provider) and I need not waste money on a 3G phone now. On top of that, my 2 year old phone is still in very good shape!

I also thought of getting hold of an Android phone (for a very different reason : to use it for a hobby development device), but then, those cell phones are too costly! 30K a pop!

Thought of buying an PS3, but then, it has got nothing more than games.

Anybody got any ideas? Help me! I will get maniac if these fever doesn't get over
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-4374373436015411982009-09-11T23:35:00.002+05:302009-09-11T23:39:03.817+05:30Domain NameWhen I renewed my domain name last month, little did I realize that I hardly use it, may be once a fortnight on average. On top that I got the domain for free last year, and it cost me Rs. 600 this year to renew. I just wanted to keep the domain name, though the name is something which will be surely frowned upon in a "Bhadraloka's " house.Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-64843996606140598792009-08-30T08:08:00.002+05:302009-08-30T08:15:18.120+05:30Fan of GB!I really liked the writing of Great Bong, whose blog link you will find on my bookmarks bar too, and now, I am a big fan of his twitts too! I like the show "Sach ka Saamna", I see how people cope with nothing but the truth.

I also get to see how the real Draupadi and/or Sita swayamvar could have been.

I DIDN'T (yet) see the so called porn clip.

Thank God, the Delhi HC didn't come down to Moral Policing when a PIL was filed against Sach Ka Saamna.

I personally don't feel the Real/Reel marriage is going to go a long way.

Whats your opinion?Do comment in.
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22827639.post-7564951890675724392009-07-12T08:14:00.002+05:302009-07-12T08:22:09.516+05:30When is 3G coming to India???India Govt isn't thinking of the people that it is serving, when they go delaying the 3G spectrum auctions further and further, just with a aim to maximize their profits. But in the end, I guess everybody is loosing. The telco operators & handset manufacturers not having the cutting edge tech to serve the consumers and hence loosing revenue, the govt loosing on the taxes they would have gathered on the revenue, and the consumers are deprived of the facilities.

What is the point? It just seems to me there is some family politics and money-exchanging-hands at the telecom ministry.

(Can someone tell me when I will get 3G, so that I can have an excuse to change my 2-year-old phone (that still is in pretty good shape, and hence I can't dispose it off!) and get an Android phone!)
Pradeep Patihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10238484238864049581noreply@blogger.com0
